About 'The Bihu Dance of Assam '

Bihu is the national and also the harvest festival of the state of Assam. For the people of Assam, Bihu is not only a festival, but also a time for celebration. Bihu dance, associated with this festival, is considered to be one of the most colourful folk dances of India.

The people here celebrate three different Bihu festivals, Bohag Bihu or Rangoli Bihu celebrated in the spring season, Magh Bihu or Bhogali Bihu celebrated in the winter and Kongali Bihu or Kati Bihu celebrated in the autumn season. This seasonal festival lasts for long days and is also time for the youth to dance. The banks of the river Brahmaputra becomes alive with the rhythms and colours of the dhol (drum) and pepa (flute) during this agricultural fest.

This agricultural fiesta is held for the appreciation of mother god for a rich harvest. Assam is the tea estate and also the gateway to the north eastern states of India. This land of Red River and Blue hills gives travelers a harmonious treat to the eyes.
