Kalarippayattu is the ancient martial art form of Kerala, India.

‘Kalari’ is the institution where training is imparted. Its linguistic origin is from the Sanskrit word Khaloorika.

In Kerala, there are two types of Kalaris. Cherukalari or Kuzhikkalari is where training is imparted.

Ankakkalari is meant for conducting duels and is set up when needed.

There are some traditional rules as to where to construct the Kalaris. The ideal place is the south- east portion of the land.

Kalaris have an aura of sanctity and piety with them. Within the Kalari, there is a structure called Poothara, where the deities of Kalari Paradevatha (Goddess of Kalari) and Lord Ganapati are installed.

Kalarippayattu is performed within the Kalari with many rituals and rites attached to it.

There is also a scientific medicine system called Kalarichikilsa associated with this martial art. Kalarichikilsa, the herbal medicine system is highly effective for bruises and sprains.

There are two styles of Kalarippayattu; the North Kerala and South Kerala styles.

In the medieval period Kalarippayattu was a way of life in the state. The Asan or Guru (teacher) of Kalarippayattu had much social respectability.
