About 'Mohiniyattam – enchanting dance'

Mohiniyattam (dance of the enchantress) is a gentle and graceful semi-classical dance form which had its origin in Kerala. Originally performed in temples by Devadasis, the temple dancers, this art form has now won high esteem thanks to the efforts of many dedicated artistes. This unique dance gives importance to the expression of grace (lasya) and facial language and mudras are given more prominence than steps. The costume is a simple one, comprising of a cream coloured gold plated sari (saree) with a wide gold border and gold ornaments.
 
Kerala Kalamandalam has done a commendable job by giving Mohiniyattam a unique status. It was due to the efforts of Poet Vallathol Narayana Menon, the founder of Kerala Kalamandalam that this was added to the curriculum of this prestigious institution An esteemed generation of Mohiniyattam artistes like Kalamandalam Kalyanikkutty Amma, Kalamandalam Kshemavathi and Kalamandalam Sathyabhama has been the contribution of Kalamandalam.
