Onam is the annual harvest festival of Kerala, the south-western state of India.

It is also the national festival of the state which is celebrated by all Keralites irrespective of their caste and faith. It falls in the month of Chingam (normally August), according to the Malayalam calendar.

A ten-day long festival, Onam commemorates the story of the legendary King Mahabali, who is believed to have ruled the state long ago. It is believed that the king was sent to the nether world by jealous Gods.

Keralites still decorate their homes and surroundings to welcome their dear king who is believed to visit them on the eve of Onam. Pookkalam (a floral pattern made in the courtyard of houses) and Onasadya, a delicious feast, mark the festivities.

Come Onam, there are many rivers and lagoons in Kerala ready to host thrilling boat races. Cultural programmes like Pulikali, Kummiyadi, Thumbi Thullal are also part of Onam festivities.
