Oppana is a colourful wedding dance popular among the Muslim community in the northern districts of Kerala like Kannur, Kozhikode and Malappuram.
In Oppana, the bride sits on a chair and her friends and relatives clad in bright finery clap and dance around her. Light Mopla (Mappila) songs that suit the tempo of the dance are usually selected.
Musical instruments like Harmonium, Tamburine, Ilathalom (cymbals) and Tabla are used as accompaniments. The songs are often teasing and on the theme of nuptial bliss.
The word Oppana supposedly comes from the Arabic word Afna. There are two kinds of Oppana; Oppana Chayal and Oppana Murukkam. Though predominantly a women’s entertainment dance, men too perform Oppana on certain occasions. |
