About 'Pandimelam – another ensemble of drums and horns'

Pandimelam is an orchestra of four instruments, performed in temples in Kerala. The instruments are Chenda, Kuzhal, Kombu and Ilathalam. Chenda is a cylindrical percussion instrument made of softwood with both its ends covered with cowhide. It is hung vertically from the shoulder of the player and beaten on one side with two sticks.

Kombu literally means horn and is a C-shaped instrument made of brass or copper. Kuzhal is a double reed wind instrument with a penetrating note. Ilathalam is a regional version of cymbals. Pandimelam is an indispensable constituent of Thrissur Pooram.
