About 'Nilgiri Tahrs at Eravikulam National Park'

Varayadu, otherwise called Nilgiri Tahr, is an endangered species of wild goat found in the Nilgiri hills of the Western Ghats. Eravikulam National Park in Idukki is originally designed to protect the endangered species of Nilgiri Tahrs. The park is situated in Devikulam, 15 km away from Munnar.

Eravikulam obtained the status of a national park in 1978. This area covered with grasslands and shola forests is itself a feast to one’s eyes. One may watch Nilgiri Tahrs in their natural surroundings here.

The mating season of the Tahr is during the monsoon.Visitors are not allowed during the period. The largest existing population of Varayadu can be seen in Eravikulam National Park. Anamudi (2695m), South India’s highest peak is located in the southern region of the park.
