Rajapalayam

Rajapalayam is a town in Virudhunagar district in Tamilnadu state of India. It is situated 85 km southwest of Madurai, the temple town in Tamilnadu. ‘Rajus’ were once a dominant community in this town and they built a fort (palayam) in this place and named it Raju Palayam. Over the years the name changed into Rajapalayam. The town is famous for the Rajapalayam breed of dogs, cotton marketing and textile industries. Spinning and weaving mills are very common here. The Rajapalayam dog, once used for hunting is a hound dog white in colour with pink nose and golden eyes. It is a hound with good height (18-20 inches – Male, 20-22 inches Female) and can be well trained, which makes it an excellent watchdog.
