Majuli -The Cradle of Assamese Culture

Majuli (Majoli), a river island in the Brahmaputra River, can be aptly called as the cradle and cultural capital of Assamese civilization, culture and heritage. The island is mainly inhabited by tribal folk who have migrated from Arunachal Pradesh several centuries ago.

Majuli is also the hub of Assamese neo-Vaishnavite culture. Thanks to the efforts of the 15th century saint Srimanta Sankaradeva who established numerous xatras (monasteries) here. One of the surviving xatras (or satra) in Majuli is Shamaguri Xatra famous for mask making. These satras are also the treasure trove of numerous dance forms – the most popular being the Satriya Dance. Being a wetland Majuli also shelters countless rare and endangered species of migratory birds and is also a hotspot for flora and fauna.
