Shiva Temple in Vaishali

Vaishali, an ancient city in the state of Bihar, is an important place when it comes to the rich cultural heritage of India. It is the birth place of Mahavira, the founder of Jainism. Gautama Buddha, the spiritual teacher who founded Buddhism preached his last sermon here before his death in ca 483 BCE.

Even before the advent of Buddhism and Jainism, Vaishali was the capital of the vibrant republican Licchavi, the most famous tribe amongst the ruling confederate clans of the Vajji Mahajanapada of ancient India. Named after King Vishal of the Mahabharata age, Vaishali houses a large number of temple complexes.

Featured here is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that the murthis or idols placed in this shrine were obtained from a talaab or pond.
