Alam Ara- 1931 (Sound Film)

“Alam Ara” released on 14th March 1931 was the first sound film in India. Produced by “Imperial Film Co.” established by Ardeshir Irani, the film was released at Majestic Cinema, Bombay.

The film was adaptation of a Parsi theatre play written by Joseph David. The adventurous film tells the story of ageing the king’s two queens and the rivalry between the two queens to take over the reign in their hands.

Master Vithal and Zubeida were the lead pair. Music by Ferozshah M. Mistri and B. Irani. The film was a huge hit at the box office.

Produced under the banner of “Imperial Movietone”. Camera was handled by Adi M. Irani. Directed by Ardeshir Irani Veteran actor, producer.

Prithviraj Kapoor and the legendary producer, director and actor from the south L. V. Prasad also acted in the film. Other popular artists of later period who were in the star cast – Jillo (noted for her mother rules), Jagdish Sethi.
