Photojournalist Steve McCurry on Holi - Incredible India CNN
Acclaimed photojournalist Steve McCurry, talks of Holi, the festival of colours.
The most prominent legend of Holi tells the story of the demoness Holika who, on the instructions of her brother King Hiranyakashyap, tried to kill his son Prahlad, an ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu.
The king was angered by his son’s refusal to worship him and so, asked his sister, who could not be touched by flames, to step into a fire with the young child. Holding Prahlad, Holika entered and sat in the midst of a blazing fire. Prahlad, who kept chanting the Lord’s name, escaped unscathed while Holika met a horrible death as the spell did not work unless she was in the fire alone.
Holi derives its name from the death of Holika, the victory of good over evil.
