Kummattikkali - A rural art form of Kerala

Kummattikkali, an ancient folk art form is popular in the northern districts of Kerala, especially in Thrissur. It is performed during the Onam season. The dancers, about 8 to 10 in number, wear distinct Kummattikkali attire. They embellish themselves with painted wooden masks and sprigs of leaves, grass and flowers and go from house to house and perform the art.

This art form involves the playing of different characters like thalla (witch), Hindu Gods and Goddesses. The thalla leads the group in dance, music and enactment. The songs sung have devotional themes.

Kummattikkali is a form of social entertainment. No special training is needed and many locals participate in the performances.
