Mural drawings at Kadammanitta Temple

A shot of the exquisite mural drawings at the Bhagavathy temple at Kadammanitta, Pathanamthitta district. The temple is famous for mural paintings and the folk ritual art Patayani. The temple is situated about 8 km away from Pathanamthitta town.

The murals of Kerala owe much to the traditional Chera style of mural art existed in South India. Kerala murals are more romantic and idealistic than realistic.

The important characteristics of Kerala murals are simplicity of subjects, technical excellence, thematic presentation, sharpness and immaterial beauty. It was during the time between the 15th century and the 18th century that this unique tradition of mural art began to evolve.

This video shows some artists engaged in drawing the paintings on the temple walls. Art lovers and artists of Kadammanitta village have extended their whole-hearted support to this mural art promotional venture. The famous poet of Malayalam, Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan is one among them.

The temple now witnesses the revolution of the mural paintings, intiated by the Endogenous Tourism Project (ETP), sponsered by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
