Marayoor - a prehistoric site

Marayoor, a hilly region in the Idukki district is noted for a pre-historic site here. The dolmens found here points to the existence of human inhabitation in the hills in the megalithic age. Locally known as Muniyaras, the granite structures are in the shape of a table with dressed surfaces on the top. The average measurement is of the dolmens of Marayoor are 2.5 feet width, 5 feet length 4-5 feet height. The granites are believed to have cut using iron chisels.
 
Megalithic burial goods like potteries and iron implements were found from archaeological excavations in the site. Kanthalloor and Chinnakanal in Idukki and Varandarappally and Anappantham in Thrissur district are some other locations in Kerala where dolmenoids are found.

Marayoor is about 40km from Munnar, the popular hill station. Tourist attractions here include a natural sandalwood (Santalum album) forest and a large children’s park under the canopy of a banyan tree.
