Pamba River in Sabarimala, Kerala

Pamba, which originates in the Western Ghats is the third longest river in South India and flows below Sabarimala, a famous pilgrim centre dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. Located on the bank of River Pamba, the Sabarimala hill temple is one of the best known pilgrim centres in Kerala.

Because of its association with Sabarimala, River Pamba is also known as Dakshina Ganga or the Ganga of the south. The pilgrims visiting Sabarimala take a dip in this river before they trek to reach the temple, as they believe it will free them from the sins they have accumulated. Pamba is also the major halting point for the pilgrims on the way to Sabarimala.
