About 'Karthareemukha Mudra'

In Hasthalakshanadeepika, the classical text on the dances of Kerala, there are 24 basic mudras or signs mentioned. These Mudras are used in the classical dance dramas of Kerala, like Kathakali, Kutiyattam, Nangiarkoothu, Mohiniyattam and Ottanthullal.


Holding the little finger straight, bending forward the other three fingers and the thumb touching the mid side of the index finger is Karthareemukha.

Karthareemukha using both palms indicates :
Sin, effort, Brahmin, fame, belly of an elephant, house, penance, purity, river bank, sea shore, dynasty, hunger, listening, say or speak, pregnancy, end and hunting.

Karthareemukha using one palm indicates :
Thou, word, opportunity, plural, we, man, face, enmity, child and mongoose.
