Parineeta - 1953

Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s Bengali novella Parineeta was adapted many times in celluloid. But the 1953 film version of this story stands out among the adaptations for one reason – it is the craftsmanship of the master director Bimal Roy.

Critics and film lovers consider Bimal Roy’s adaptation as the most faithful. The film was noted for the brilliant performance of Meena Kumari in the role of Lalita. Ashok Kumar, Pratima Devi, Nasir Hussain are the other major actors who appears on the screen. Arun Kumar Mukherjee, who was playback singer of that time, composed the music for the film. The film was produced by Ashok Kumar.
