About 'Vijay Ghat, New Delhi '

Vijay Ghat is the Samadhi of Lal Bahadur Shastri, the second Prime Minister of India, who passed away on 11 January 1966.

This memorial is located near Rajghat and is on the banks of river Yamuna in New Delhi, India. Vijay Ghat can be accessed on the way to Delhi gate by the Ring Road.

It was in honour of the victory which India won under his leadership during the Indo-Pakistan war of 1965 that Shastri’s Samadhi was named Vijay Ghat which means Victory Platform.

Lal Bahadur Shastri was a person who was remembered for his humility and honesty throughout his life. The slogan 'Jai Jawan and Jai Kisan' (hail the soldier, hail the farmer) is attributed to him and is inscribed on his Samadhi. He was the first person to be posthumously awarded the Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award.

With a tear in my eye and a lump in my throat, I salute you for the dignity that you bestowed on the Jawan and the Kisan. Alas! the Babus of day have robbed them of respect.
