One of the popular wildlife sighted in and around Ladakh in Kashmir, especially in the north and northeastern parts of the district is the Himalayan Marmot. This stocky, coarse-furred, burrowing rodent with a short bushy tail is a lively animal and often lives in colonies on the slopes and valley floors. Marmots are difficult to spot during winter as they tend to hibernate.
