Sonamarg, located en route to Leh from Srinagar is one of the favourite tourist spots in the State of Jammu and Kashmir, especially for those with a zeal for adventure. Sonamarg offers several options for trekking to some of the glaciers nearby and its higher reaches are used for alpine skiing. It is also one of the base camps for pilgrims proceeding to the Holy Amarnath Cave via Baltal. 

Sonamarg is considered as a gateway to Ladakh and the Zoji-La pass, situated about 20 kms east of Sonamarg leads one into the Ladakh plateau.
