Belur at Hassan district in Karantaka is known for its Chennakesava temple complex dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Belur was the early capital of the Hoysala Empire.

Chennakesava temple earlier known as Vijaynarayana temple is built on the banks of the river Yagachi. The temple is one of the finest examples of Hosyala architecture. Friezes of charging elephants, mythological figures, military scenes, musicians, and elaborate decorative motifs adorn the temple walls.
