About 'Nangyarkoothu – a female solo dance'

Nangyarkoothu is a kind of classical dance drama performed by Nangyars, the female members of the Chakyar community, the traditional Koothu performers. This solo dance is usually performed in the conventional temple theatre called Koothupura. Nangyarkoothu claims to have a history of 1500 years. This unique performance has the stories of Lord Sree Krishna as its theme. The story is told through songs and elaborate mudras which are similar to that of Kutiyattam. Mizhavu, a large percussion instrument accompanies the performance.
