About 'Ayyappanpaattu - praising Lord Ayyappa'

The songs featuring in Ayyappan Pattu (song) are replete with stories connected to Lord Ayyappa and also his heroic deeds. This ritual is very popular during the pilgrim season at Sabarimala, (Sabari Hill) which is the abode of Lord Ayyappa. During the season, Ayyappan Paattu is held with people participating, irrespective of caste and creed. This is an essential part of the fasting and other religious observations related to the pilgrim season of Sabarimala.

Musical instruments like Udukku accompany these songs. Hence these songs are also known as Udukku Paattu and Sasthaam Paattu. This song has seven constituents_ Pandissevam, Pulissevam, Eezhassevam, Ilavarassevam, Velissevam, Panthalassevam, and Velarssevam.
