About 'Breaking twelve thousand coconuts'

Breaking twelve thousand coconuts is a ritual popular in the temples of northern Kerala. The ritual, performed continuously in a rhythmic motion, is said to be the most favourite offering to Vettakkorumakan, the folk deity. It is believed that by observing this ritual, one gets purified of one’s worldly sins.

Vettakkorumakan is believed to be the son of Lord Shiva and goddess Parvati. He is a hunter god and is worshipped in many village shrines in northern Kerala.

In the video, the coconut breaking ritual held at Vettakkorumakan Temple at Thilanoor in Kannur is seen.
