Puthiya Bhagavathy Theyyam

Theyyam, the spectacular art form popular in the northern parts of Kerala, is deep rooted in the life of the rustic folk. Their beliefs, emotions, experiences and expectations are well reflected in the Theyyam figures (Kolams).

Some figures are, for them, mother-like, while some others are guardian deities. Hunter deities, disease deities and exorcist deities are also there, symbolizing the different elements of human and divine lives.

Puthiya Bhagavathy, the figure featured in the video, is exorcist in nature. Mythologically the daughter of Lord Shiva, she possesses powers to cure illnesses like measles and pox. The costume and looks of Puthiya Bhagavathy Theyyam is fierce and awe-inspiring, with burning torches fixed on the dress made up of tender coconut fronds.

The facial make up is also subtle and intricate. This video clip is shot at Adikkumpara Puthiya Bhagavathy temple, Kannur.
