Vellattam is similar to Thottam, the preliminary ritual of a Theyyam performance. It is mostly performed for the male deities. The Vellattam will have only minimal make up and costumes, yet it is more elaborate and colourful than that of Thottam.

Vellattam ritual is invocative in nature and is observed for the performer to get possessed by the divine spirits. Ritual songs that describe the legends of the prime deity are sung as part of this. Trance-like dance is also performed.
