Walking on the fire is an act of self purification according to Hindu religion. This ritual is observed in the northern parts of the state as an accompaniment to the Theyyam performance.

Devotees after taking a bath would run over a specially prepared fire pit in the temple premises. While in some places the fire place would be in the ground level at several other places it would be a heap of amber.
