Uthralikkavu pooram - elephant pageant and fireworks
Uthralikkavu pooram is the annual festival of Sree Ruthira Mahakalikavu Temple at Wadakkancherry in Thrissur district of Kerala.
The eight-day long festival is an offering to goddess Kali, the presiding deity of the temple. The pooram is celebrated by the residents of three deshams (regions) called Kumaranellur, Enkakkad and Wadakkancherry.
The fireworks held here is simply spectacular. Elephant pageantry and traditional percussion ensembles like Panchavadyam are other highlights.
The Pooram Ezhunnallippu (ceremonial procession) from the Lord Siva temple at Wadakkancherry to Uthralikkavu is a colourful one. In the olden days, the King of the erstwhile princely state of Kochi (Cochin) along with armed soldiers escorted the Ezhunnalippu.
Even now the tradition of armed policemen escorting the procession is continued.
As part of the festival, a Panchavadyam performance called Nadappura Panchavadyam is held at the Wadakkancherry temple. It is considered next only to the Panchavadyam performance held during the Madathilvaravu ceremony of Thrissur pooram.
