The famous Vaikom Mahadeva temple situated in Kottayam district, on the shores of Vembanad lake, has with it the vibrating moments of history since the famous Vaikkom Satyagraha in 1924 which demanded the equal right of all Hindus to enter the temple was held here. Vaikkom gets its name from Vyaghra Pada, the sage who carried the idol of Lord Shiva to the temple.
The temple celebrates two Ashtamis every year -one in the month of Kumbha and the other in Vrischika. However, the second one is more prominent. This is celebrated to commemorate the legend that it was on this day that Parasurama, the founder of the temple granted boons to the sage. Vaikkom Ashtami is a colourful festival. The image of Shiva is carried on elephant back and taken around as a procession. By the night an equally grand procession sets out from the nearby Muruka temple of Udayanapuram. It joins with the one from Vaikkom temple and it is believed that this is the meeting of Lord Shiva and his son Lord Subrahmania. Devotees from all over Kerala flock here to witness to this unique event.
