Mappilappattu or Mappila songs- II

Presented here is a Mappila Paatt or Mappila song. Usually these songs are sung by the Muslim community of north Kerala during their festival occasions. The lyrics of these songs are a perfect blend of Malayalam and Arabic languages. Words and phrases are also borrowed from other languages like Urdu, Persian, Hindi, Tamil, Sanskrit and Kannada.

The rhythm of these songs is a perfect blend of Arabic and Malayalam folk tunes. The themes for these songs are diverse- devotion, love, satire, heroism etc. are some among them. The metre of this is denoted by the term Isal. Traditionally, they were transferred from one generation to another orally.
