Making of Mizhavu

Mizhavu is a native drum used in the performance of art forms like Koothu and Kutiyattam.

This instrument has the shape of a big pot. Presented in this video are the different processes in the making making of a Mizhavu.

This centre is located near Irinjalakkuda in Thrissur district. Here the drum is made in the traditional way.

Making a Mizhavu is a time-consuming process. There are many stages including the heating of copper plate, shaping and covering the mouth with hide.

Only few artisans in the state are involved in the production of this rare instrument.
