Veena and Chenda are two popular musical instruments of Kerala. The ancient instrument Veena is mostly used in Karnatic music and is attributed with a divine quality. Chenda, on the other hand, has more of a folk nature and is considered to be an Asura Vadya (demonic percussion) though it is also a favourite accompaniment to Kathakali and Kutiyattam, two classical art forms of Kerala. Though quite different in each other’s nature, Maya Varma on Veena and Margi Krishnadas on Chenda present a harmony of the diverse when they present the evergreen lullaby Omanathinkal Kidavo by Irayimman Thampi.
