Being home to about 500 varieties of birds, 16 of them endemic, the fauna of Kerala has an amazing diversity. It is no wonder that the state has become a favourite spot of ornithologists.
Grey Breasted Laughing Thrush (Garrulax jerdoni) is endemic to the western ghats of Kerala. It has a restricted range. It still can be seen in areas like Munnar in Idukki district.
This bird is normally a skulker but comes out to feed on its favourite nectar plants. They are also seen moving in small groups, though rarely.
They also feed on small insects.
Due to habitat loss, these birds are given a near threatened status.
