About 'Beypore beach – story of ancientness'

The Beypore beach is a prominent place of tourist as well as of historic importance in Kerala, India. It is located at the mouth of river Chaliyar about 10 kilometres away from Kozhikode town (Calicut). Beypore was a port of trade and maritime centre in the olden ages. This ancient port had witnessed much trade and transactions of the Arabian merchants from West Asia, Chinese travellers and later Europeans with the local dealers here.

One of the major attractions of this place is the existence of the 1,500 years old tradition of shipbuilding industry. The country ships made at Beypore completely by hand are known as ‘Dhows’ (Arabian Trading Vessels) or in the native language as ‘Uru’. Even now, Arabs cross the Arabian sea to buy ‘Urus’. This age old knowledge of building country ships is possessed by a select group of people here.

Two other nearby attractions of Beypore are worth mentioning here. First is the famous fishing harbour situated hardly one kilometre away from the shipbuilding yard of Beypore. Second, the bird watchers paradise and haven of migratory birds, the Kadalundi bird sanctuary, which is about seven kilometres from the beach.
