The Thiruvambadi temple in Thrissur district is dedicated to Lord Sree Krishna. Goddess Devi (Vishnumaya) is also an important deity of the temple.
The temple is a proud participant of the grand Thrissur Pooram festival. Among the nine temples that take part in the Thrissur pooram, Thiruvambadi and Paramekkavu are the most important ones.
The two temples are friendly rivals in the pooram with both sides vying each other to present their best, whether it be illumination or Kudamattam, the competitive display of colourful parasols atop caparisoned elephants.
On the main day of the Thrissur Pooram there is a colourful ceremonious procession called Madathilvaravu from this temple to the Vadakkumnathan temple, the main venue of festivities.
In this the Thidambu (replica of main idol) of Goddess Bhagavathy and Kolam of Lord Krishna are taken out to the Vadakkumnatha temple. There will be a halt at the nearby Brahmaswom mutt.
Caparisoned elephants and drum ensembles add to the charm of the procession. Men atop the elephants hold colourful parasols and white tufts. The Panchavadyam (traditional temple orchestra) performance during Madathilvaravu is regarded as the best of its kind. |
