Ajanta Cave No. 24, Aurangabad

Cave No. 24 was originally intended for a pillared vihara (monasteries with a sanctuary in the structure's rear centre). But only one column of the front aisle was finished inside. Also the pillars in the back and side rows are only roughly blocked out. There are elaborate works on the six pillars of the verandah. It is been assumed from the unfinished interior work that the cave is probably one of the latest excavated, roughly around the second half of the seventh century. The Ajanta Caves which includes paintings and sculptures, considered to be masterpieces of Buddhist religious art, is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
