They are imposing and majestic. The mountains that tower on either side of the Gangotri valley are quite striking and are visible from a distance, as one approaches the Gangotri town from the eastern side. Gangotri is situated in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.
During months other than winter, the mountain slopes with their barren and jagged rocky surface looks highly formidable. The lower reaches of these mountains are occupied by conifers and other alpine type of vegetation.
