The Bamiyan Buddha has been recreated. The original giant statue of Buddha in Afghanistan was blasted to smithereens by the Taliban in 2001. The replica is being made in Dehradun by an Indian artist, Raghuveer Panwar, who had worked in Bamiyan for nine years. He has made a detailed study of the giant statue from various photographs. The replica Buddha in Dehradun is already famous with the locals and is attracting hordes of tourists.
