Jagte Raho - 1956

In the year 1956 Raj Kapoor came with his extraordinary film Jagte Raho that narrates the ordeals encountered by a poor villager who is in pursuit of a better life in a city. Raj Kapoor produced and did the lead role in the film.

Jagte Raho, which means stay awake or stay alert, was directed by Amit Maitra and Sombhu Mitra. Nargis also appears in a cameo role in the final scene of the film. The film also has a brilliant soundtrack composed by Salil Choudhary. The songs were penned by Shailendra and Prem Dhawan. The songs Zindagi Khwaab Hai, Main Koi Jhoot Boleya and Jaago Mohan Pyaare are some of the most remembered songs from this film.

The film won Certificate of Merit at the fourth annual National Film Awards. In the year 1957 a shortened version of the film was screened in the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in Czechoslovakia in which it won the Crystal Globe Grand Prix.
