Satriya

The Satriya dance has its origin in the Island of Majuli, situated in the middle of the mighty Brahmaputra River in Assam. The name ‘Satriya’ is derived from ‘Satra’ the monastery of the Vaishnavite sect.

This classical dance is noted for its elegant simplicity. Today, it is one of the popular classical dance forms of Assam, portraying the cultural and traditional essence of the Majuli Islanders. Majuli is one of the biggest riverine islands in the world.

Performed here is Anita Sharma, a brilliant exponent of Satriya. She is the disciple of the great Guru Jatin Goswami.
