Mizhavu Thayambaka Performance Part 1

Mizhavu Thayambaka is a massed performance of percussion instruments especially accomplished during Kutiyattam, one of the oldest classical dance forms originated in Kerala. A Mizhavu is a huge copper pot with its mouth covered by leather. It is mainly used as the lead percussion for Kutiyattam and other traditional dance forms.

The performance starts with ‘Mizhavu Ochapeduthal’, which literally means the sounding of Mizhavu, to remove the evil presence around the Koothambalam (the theatre). Mizhavu is also played in the Thayambaka style (ensemble) and in this video you can see a group of artistes creating harmonious blend of rhythm by Mizhavu Thayambaka.
