Sri Omkareshwara Temple, Madikeri

Built by King Lingarajendra in 1820, Sri Omkareshwara Temple is located close to Madikeri, a mesmerizing hill station in the state of Karnataka, India. The temple built in both Islamic and Gothic style of architecture, has a tank in front and a footpath leading to a small "Mandap".

Legend is that to fulfill his political ambitions, Lingarajendra killed an honest and pious Brahmin who later became a "Brahmarakshasa" and started worrying the king. Lingarajendra, to save his life, brought a Shivalinga from Kashi and installed it after building a temple. The Shivalinga was named as "Omkareshwara" and regular rituals were performed.
