Malabar Trogon or Harpactes fasciatus

In Kerala, there are 500 birds of different hues and shapes adding to the charm of the fauna here. 16 of these bird species are endemic to the state and can be seen in our backyards, villages, cities and dense forests.

The Malabar Trogon (Harpactes fasciatus) is a 31 centimetres long bird found in dense tropical forests. It is one of the most spectacular of all forest birds, with its bright crimson coloured underparts. The head and breast of the male are black. However females have got a duller complexion.

They generally feed on fruits and insects. They have a swift flight, but don’t fly long distances. They build nests hollow tree stumps and lay an average of two to four eggs at one time.

The birds are usually seen sitting upright on a branch. Interestingly enough, the birds have a curious habit of turning their backs towards the bird watcher!
