White-bellied Treepie

In the matter of bird diversity, undoubtedly India possesses the first rank among other countries. Of the total 9700 species worldwide, India has about 1300. Of these 142 are endemic to our country. Kerala, one of the smallest of the Indian states, has about 500 species of which 16 are endemic to Western Ghats and can be seen in the forests of Kerala. Also in the matter of colour and beauty some of our birds are the most exquisite found anywhere.

The White-bellied Treepie is a colourful bird with a rather loud and metallic call. This bird an endemic to Western Ghats. It is one of the most elegant of all forest birds of Kerala. It belongs to the family of crows, magpies and jays, viz; the Corvidae family of the Passeriformes order under the Aves class. Known by the scientific name Dendrocitta Leucogastra in the field of Ornithology, the White-bellied Treepie inhabits the forests of subtropical and tropical moist lowlands.
