Mahishamardini Cave at Mahabalipuram

Mahishamardini Cave, a cave dedicated to the mother goddess is one of the major monuments in Mahabalipuram. The cave is embellished with friezes of geese and the walls are decorated with various themes. One can see Lord Vishnu on his serpent-couch is carved in the wall.

The main attraction in this cave is the battle scene of the goddess killing the demon Mahisha. The goddess Mahishamardini is shown as the eight armed and riding her lion equipped with all weapons. Mahabalipuram, a World Heritage Site is situated on the Coromandal coast to the south of Chennai in Tamil Nadu state, India.
