A holy town in Uttarakhand state of India, Uttarkashi meaning Kashi of the north, is situated on the banks of river Bhagirathi at an altitude of 1352 m above sea level. Like Kashi or Varanasi, another sacred city in the state, Uttarkashi is also situated on the Ganges, lying next to a hill named Varun Parvat, on the confluence of two rivers Varuna and Asi.
