Jukti Takko Aar Gappo or Reason, Debate and a story, film by Ritwik Ghatak

The Bengali film Jukti Takko Aar Gappo translated from the Bengali language, West Bengal, India to mean Reason, Debate, and a story, was created in 1974. As the last film presented to the Indian cinema world, Jukti Takko Aar Gappo was written and directed by legendary Ritwik Ghatak.

The storyline revolves around the life of a suffering man whose wife leaves him and forces him into homelessness because of his severe alcoholism. Attempting to survive, he wanders the landscape meeting characters along the way. This piece uses an unusual but inspiring fusion of images to portray the narration of the story.

Ghatak not only exposes his struggle as an alcoholic in this semi-autobiographical piece but he exposes others who share his homeland and their lives full of self-absorption and lack of ideology.

The cast features wonderful performances by Ritwik Ghatak as Neelkantha, Ritaban Ghatak as Satya, Bijon Bhattacharya as Jagannath, Saugata Burman as Nachiketa, Utpal Dutt as Shatrujit, Shaonli Mitra as Bangababa, Tripti Mitra as Durga, Gyanesh Mukherjee as Panchanan Ustad, and Ananya Ray as the Leader of Naxalites.

The movie was written and directed by Ritwik Ghatak. It also included an original soundtrack composed by Ghatak. Cinematography was supervised by Baby Islam, editing was performed by Amalesh Sikdar, choreography by S. Bhattacharya, and Music by Ustad Bahadur Khan.
