Antarjali Yatra, a Bengali film by Gautam Ghose

Antarjali Yatra or The Journey Beyond was created in 1987. This film’s primary language is Bengali, West Bengal, India and is 134 minutes in length. This movie was created by Gautam Ghose, and was inspired by a novel of the same name by Kamal Kumar Majumdar.

This historical Indian cinema portrays the extraordinary application of caste and gender bias in nineteenth century Bengal. This story was set in 1830's India, at the time the British Colonial government had outlawed sati (suttee), or throwing the widow onto the funeral pyre of her husband. An old man awaiting his death at the Ganges River or River Ganga is advised by an astrologer to marry a young wife. A poor Brahmin was chosen and tries to convince his young daughter to marry the elderly man, because the family would inherit his riches upon his death. But the custom of the dying man was that of sati (suttee) and his wife was to die with him. An untouchable, the cremation grounds attendant, tries to talk the girl out of the marriage. The untouchable, however, may not have to worry, as death is taking longer than expected and the family has more important matters to tend.

Shampa Ghosh plays the young girl, Yashobati, Vasant Choudhury as Yashobati's father, Promode Ganguly as Seetaram the cremation ground attendant, and Robi Ghosh as the astrologer.

This drama was directed by Gautam Ghose, with a screenplay inspired by Kamal Kumar Majumdar and produced by Ravi Malik
