This video features Ayyappan Theeyattu, an old ritualistic performance performed in temples especially in northern parts of Kerala. It is performed in the temples dedicated to Sasthavu (the primeval concept of Lord Ayyappan).

Lord Ayyappan, brought up under the divine guidance of Lord Shiva becomes adept in vedas and he even defeated Lord Indra (the king of heaven). At the time when Indra was forced to hand over heaven to Lord Ayyappan, Indra pleaded to Lord Shiva for heaven.

Eventually Lord Shiva asks his son Lord Ayyappa to go to earth and remain there as the lord of humans. Lord Ayyappan obeys his father’s order. You can also see Uzhichil or worshipping Lord Ayyappan using fire and ghee during the Ayyappan Theeyattu ritual.
